A handsome pen with fine writing qualities
I tested this pen with the 1.1mm stub italic nib and the fine nib. Both are reliable, smooth writers giving a consistent line. The stub shows off shading inks well.
The pen feels quite substantial in the hand, both in size and weight. The balance point is a little too far back from the nib unposted. The cap doesn’t really post - it makes the pen overbalanced, and only posts onto the piston knob. The writing section is an untapered cylinder, in keeping with the limited taper in the pen’s overall design. Despite the lack of ergonomics, this is a relatively comfortable pen to use for medium writing sessions - great for writing journal entries, but likely to be too fatiguing for intense writing like essay exams.
The resin is deep and lustrous in shade, and the rose gold accents stand out. On my pen, the patterning is stronger on one side of the barrel than the other, and the writing section also doesn’t quite match. More consistency would have been aesthetically better.
I really like the fact the ink window is visible when the pen is capped - none of my other non-demonstrator pens have this feature.
The nibs are gorgeous. Big (I think they’re #6) and decorated with the Narwhal logo and scrollwork, they are also a joy to write with. After only a page or so of breaking in, the nibs glide. The fine has a slight but pleasant bit of bounce to it, and is on a par with a Parker fine nib for line width. The stub is more like a true italic nib. Both performed perfectly without any adjustment. These are Goldilocks nibs, neither wet nor dry but just right. Tested with Noodler’s and Diamine inks.

Super Narwhal
This is a perfect Narwhal pen. It’s solidly made and you can feel that quality when you write. The piston filler means it can hold a ton of ink, which is handy when using a stub nib which writes brilliantly; very smooth.
The colours are gorgeous! They are a little more muted than photos can show, which I love, and it’s hypnotising watching the colours shift in the light.
